What are archetypes?

Yes, what are archetypes (and make it simple please)?

An archetype is a recognisable pattern of human behaviour and psychology.

In other words, you might think of an archetype as a universal pattern of human identity and experience.

Archetypes appear throughout mythology, religion, literature, movies, dreams and everyday life.

The Hero. The Lover.

The Warrior. The Sage.

And the Magician.

We recognise these characters because they represent something already living within us.

They are not merely fictional characters.

Instead, they are expressions of human consciousness. And each unique expression follows a pattern.

Think of a bully, for example. Whether you meet one in the schoolyard or teaching a class through force rather than finesse, you recognise the same traits or qualities. Together, these form the pattern we know as the ‘bully’ archetype.

Each archetype sees the world differently.

Each has its own desires.

Its own fears, gifts and challenges.

Its own way of responding to life.

And its own language.

Recognising your inner archetypes

When you begin recognising these archetypes within yourself, your behaviour begins to make more sense.

For example, you understand why one part of you longs for security while another craves adventure.

Or why one part wants to care for everyone while another desperately needs freedom.

And why one part believes anything is possible while another prepares for disappointment.

These are not contradictions.

Rather, they are different aspects of you asking to be seen, understood and empowered. They are your inner archetypes making themselves known.

And though there is an argument to be made for there being hundreds of different archetypes, the easiest, most accessible and perhaps most beneficial way to understand and work with them is to focus on the Core Twelve.

How can they help me?

Like, REALLY help me?

Understanding the archetypes helps you understand yourself—and gives you more choice in how you respond to life.

You begin to recognise the patterns behind your feelings, decisions and behaviour.

For example, why you keep putting others first.

Or why you long for change but hold on to what is familiar.

And why you have so much you want to express, yet hesitate to share it.

Along the way, you discover that within you are the qualities you need to move forward.

While all expressions of archetypal energy can teach us something, it helps to start with a clear focus. There are many ways to name and describe archetypes. But what makes them helpful is their recognisability: the familiar patterns of behaviour, feeling and thinking they reveal. So, working with twelve core archetypes gives us a simple way to recognise these patterns—and begin learning from them.

The Core Twelve

So let us explore twelve primary archetypes, each with gifts to help you in everyday life:

The Innocent helps you trust yourself and welcome new possibilities.

The Orphan helps you recognise your shared humanity and find belonging.

The Warrior helps you protect your boundaries and take courageous action.

The Caregiver helps you care for others while honouring your own needs.

The Seeker helps you discover what feels true and follow your own path.

The Destroyer helps you let go of what has reached its end.

The Lover helps you deepen connection and enjoy what you love.

The Creator helps you express yourself and bring your ideas to life.

The Ruler helps you create order and take responsibility for your life.

The Magician helps you see possibilities for transformation and change.

The Sage helps you find clarity and make wiser choices.

The Jester helps you enjoy the moment and bring lightness to life.

Bringing Your Archetypes Together

Every one of these archetypes lives within you.

You may recognise some immediately.

Others may feel less familiar.

Some may already be expressed in empowered, loving and life-enhancing ways.

Others may be hidden. Wounded. Rejected. Or operating from the shadows.

Perhaps your Caregiver gives so much that you feel exhausted. Your Warrior can help you set a loving boundary.

Perhaps your Ruler holds everything so tightly that life feels heavy. Your Jester can help you make room for play.

Perhaps your Creator has a vision, but you hesitate to begin. Your Warrior can help you take the first step.

The purpose is not to decide which archetypes are good and which are bad.

Every archetype contains extraordinary gifts.

By recognising how each one is expressing itself through you, you can understand what needs your attention—and choose which qualities to bring forward.

So you can respond with greater awareness, express more of who you are, and become the author of your life.
